When you look at the statistics, you know this is true: everyone knows someone who has experienced domestic violence. In Texas, according to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, 40.1% of women and 34.9% of men suffer from intimate partner violence, compared to the national average of 24.3% of women and 13.8% of men.
Behind those statistics, are people who are hurting. This month, during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we focus on getting the word out about all the resources available to help them stop hurting.
On Tuesday, October 1, 2024, we join the Texas Council on Family Violence (TCFV) to honor Texas victims. Each year, TCFV tells the true stories behind domestic violence fatalities through its Honoring Texas Victims Report. I encourage you to read those stories here to fully understand the gravity of the work we do.
Then on Monday, October 7, 2024, we observe the Day of Unity, to recognize the origin of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, now in its 35th year. On October 17, 2024, we encourage everyone to wear purple on “Go Purple Day,” as a symbol of peace, courage, survival, honor, and personal dedication to domestic violence awareness.
Recently, I had the privilege of attending the National Conference on Domestic Violence in Chicago to represent The Family Place, along with our former CEO Paige Flink and DVBeds Manager Kimberly Linzy-Davis, to spread the word about DVBeds, a national platform launched by The Family Place to help service providers work together to support clients. It was a great time of encouragement and collaboration across agencies.
Collaboration—not only between service providers and communities but also all of us as individuals—is key to saving lives at risk because of family violence. How can you be a part of the solution? It’s not a coincidence that two of our most important fundraising and awareness-raising events are held during Domestic Violence Awareness Month—the Texas Trailblazer Awards Luncheon on October 4 and The Family Place Partners Card shopping event October 25–November 3. You can read more about these important events below. I encourage you to help us spread the word about these events and the lifesaving and life-changing programs at The Family Place.
Thank you for your support!
